Weight loss surgery procedures
We offer the latest advancements in the Treatment of Morbid Obesity including
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB).
Lap-Band® Surgery
LAGB is the most commonly performed operation for the treatment of morbid obesity
worldwide. Over 250,000 have been performed over 11 years.
The device was FDA approved in 2001 for use in the United States. The procedure
involves placement of a soft, adjustable and removable silicon ring around the upper
stomach. The ring is adjustable via a port placed beneath the skin on the patient’s
abdomen.
LAGB is as effective for weight loss as LRNY with less risk of major complications
such as leakage of gastric juice and is 2000 times less likely to result in death.
Patients who undergo Lap-Band® surgery not only are limited in terms of how much
they can eat, they are not hungry between meals. This feeling of fullness seems to be the
most important factor for weight loss in Band patients.
LAGB is very effective in reducing the severity of illiness associated with obesity
such as Diabetes, Hypertension and Sleep Apnea.
Patients can go home the day of surgery and back to work in 2 days.
Laproscopic Roux-enY Gastric Bypass (LRYGB)
LRNY is the most commonly performed operation for the treatment of morbid obesity in the
United States. The procedure involves dividing the stomach, leaving an egg-sized gastric
pouch, and rearranging the intestines so that less food is absorbed. It is very effective,
both for weight loss and at reducing the severity of illnesses associated with obesity
such as Diabetes and Hypertension in the short term.
Weight loss from this procedure averages 60-80% loss of excess body weight.
The LRYGB is highly effective because patients not only eat less and feel full quickly,
but they also do not fully absorb the food they eat.
Most patients are discharged home in 2-4 days.
